ALPINE CHAMOIS
_____________
WESTLAND IS HOME TO SOME OF THE BEST CHAMOIS TROPHIES NEW ZEALAND HAS TO OFFER
Chamois (Rupicapra) arrived as a gift from Austria in 1907. Today, you can find these nimble alpine ‘antelope’ in New Zealand’s rugged Southern Alp foothills and high country. Aside from being a challenging chase – New Zealand chamois carry horns as large as any in the world! Both sexes carry horns – males tend to have heavier sets with longer hooks.
Today, chamois are only found in a few places around the world; join us in exploring some of New Zealand’s most inspiring highlands as we spot and stalk a true mountain trophy. Our certified guide guarantees shot opportunities on all chamois hunts.
Chamois can be hunted year-round. They sport gorgeous dark colors in winter (late April to August) and tan colored fur in summer (December to March). Peak rut occurs in May & June. By July, chamois bucks begin to congregate in bachelor groups as the weather turns coldest.
We specialize in free range Chamois hunting.
The Alpine Chamois is a challenging animal to hunt, super alert and extremely agile.
We can take you to areas where Chamois are within only 1-2 hours walk from camp so if you have a reasonable level of fitness we can help you find that trophy of a lifetime.
Either helicopter or 4WD vehicle is used to transport us to our hunting areas.
In spectacular surroundings you will hunt from a comfortable tent camp.
You can hunt these animals year round, though hunting is best February - July. Chamois rut is May - July.
